I have been asked by a colleague on site to advise on the angle of repose of 40mm stone media in a filter bed.

They have to excavate a maximum of 1.8m to the base of the bed by hand.

My initial thoughts are 30deg as a maximum but with the material being stone I feel it will probably be a case of dig it and see!!

Any thoughts on a more rigorous answer to the problem appreciated.

Thirty degrees sounds like a safe bet, not a maximum, unless the stones are roundish. Why don't you dig a test hole and see what the angle of repose is? It defintiely doesn't sound like you need a soils report.

30 degrees would be about right. Why by hand? Can't get a vac. truck or trailer near enough?

Thanks guys. Didn't think of the vac - probably the way to go.
We're going to dig and see what happens but use 30degs for initial volume calcs!

Cheers
