Hi,

I just am trying to calculate a the shear resistance of an uncracked section using 1992-1-1:2004 Equation 6.4 and I am just confused with the wording for the first area of moment. It says:

"S is the first moment of area above and about the centroidal axis."

A couple of questions if the distance, for a rectangular section, from the centroid is x. Does this mean the first moment of area is x^2*b/2 or x^2*b? And what does it mean above, for example if the compression area is on the bottom do I still use the area above or do i use the compression area.
