Residence time is a function of everything from salinity of the water to temperature to crude gravity. This book covers it all. A heater treater or gun barrel may have to be installed to break the oil water emulsion. Experimental data may even have to be employed if all else fails.

For a such heavy oil, I'd recomend you have some oil test before you design the treater. That can help you find a good Temp-Residence time poing. Otherwise, you should have comparable dada for similar project. The time is not only depent on the oil desity, but aslo depent on compositon, sanity of oil.
