Hi all,

I got an engineering request to study the possibility to build a bypass around an ESD valve for maintenance purpose. Is it acceptable? I haven’t seen a bypass around ESD ! what is API or ASME reference in this case. ?

Bypass around ESDV for maintenance?? Very Bad practice. If you need to repair the ESDV shut the plant down or stop the equipment. Remember safety(ESDV) first, production is later( i dont what to say even second). I dont suggest to use bypass of ESDV for maintenance purposes.

all definitions of safety are developed during your process hazards review, bypasses, testing proceedures, the need for ESD's. startup proceedures, shutdown, etc, are not decided arbitrarily
