Hi

I am junior mechanical engineer that has both electronics and mechanical parts. I recently had an issue with the person that looks after pick and place machines and pcb assembly area. They have ESD floor mats, esd table mats and everyone who work there have leg straps. To access the tool cupboard in the room I occasionally enter the room. I do not touch or go near any of those pcbs. Should I still wear a leg strap so that I am grounded.

I am just wondering if I don't wear leg straps will there be any problems. When I asked why? they were not able to give me a proper answer. Appreciate your help in advance.

Thanks,

V.

Typically there is a marked line that isn't crossed without proper ESD protection, regardless of what you actually intend to touch. Look like you belong there, put on the strap if you're going to enter the space, even if you see no risk.

Engineers are a privileged class in a factory, and are _always_ being watched.

It is therefore important to set a good example in every possible way, especially by being extra fastidious about ESD precautions, use of safety glasses, and every other rule that is, or should be, enforced within your factory.

As David has mentioned, the assembly area should have a demarcation line between ESD and non-ESD areas (usually 1 metre away from any sensitive areas). I was surprised you did not mention anti-static overalls or coats in this department. These are mandatory in our assembly areas: no ESD coat, no entry! We also have the leg straps, or heel grounders, but as an alternative we use 'ESD shoes'. These can also have steel toecaps included - very useful if you need to go between workshop and electronic assembly areas.
