Hello all,

A new member here.

I am currently doing some reading and research on Schmertmann's method for settlement calculations. More specifically on the elastic modulus used in this method. What Es modulus is Schmertmann using in his calculations? is the initial tangential modulus or the secant modulus? it seems unclear in Schmertmann 1970 original paper.

Anyone has a good paper that summarizes CPT and Es correlation?

Thanks!

It does not specify, but its likely a secant modulus. Also note, the 2.5 times qc and 3 times qc for square and strip footing is conservative.

Robertson has published correlations for qc to Es. alpha is a factor that is used in the correlation which is based on ic if i remember. Es can get very large, compared to values you would typically use. We often cap alpha at 7, no reference for the cap level. Just seems to be what has been done in the ground improvement industry in the middle east.

Check his latter paper?
