Equivalent elastic modulus

Hi,

I have a steel plate coated with lead.

How can I find the equivalent modulus of the plate, if the steel and lead plate thickness are equal.

The plate is subjected to axial as well as bending loads.

You have to develop an equivalent homogenous section. This is frequently done for steel reinforced concrete.

This plate covers x-ray source. It is coated to avoid passage of x-rays.

Look under "Composite Beams" [Budynas "Advanced Strength & Applied Stress Analysis" has it]
Axial - set the strains equal,
stress in stl = [Es/El]x Stress in lead

Bending - use equivalent cross section, equiv width of steel = [Es/El]*orig width.

maybe neglect lead altogether [since E~ 1/15 that of steel]
& just use steel thickness in calc's?
