Epoxy coating of reinforcing bars

I have a project where I need to cut a 7' x 7' hole in an existing slab which is reinforced with epoxy coated bars.

When the hole is filled back in I want to weld on extensions to the cut off bars and then coat the extension bars with an epoxy to make it compatible with the rest of the bars.

Has anyone out there done this sort of thing? Any advice on specifications or manufacturers of epoxy resins would be appreciated.

I would also be concerned about the welding. Make sure you know what type of rebar is in place. If it is not A706, make sure you know the chemistry of it before welding.

I recommend you consider mechanical couplers for three reasons. First, the grade of the existing and new rebar needs to be compatible for welding and ASTM A706 is the only way to go on that. If you don't have existing A706 material you're busted before you get started. Second, mechanical couplers are available for just this sort of situation and usually are capable of developing 125% of the yeild of the bar. Finally, welding requires a substantial QC program and expertise when compared to installation of mechanical couplers. Good Luck

I have gone for mechanical couplers and specified that these be epoxy coated too after installation.
