embedding/linking .CFG files

Does anyone have any experience of using the binder to link to .CFG files.

I have a camera control unit and I want to link the camera software .CFG file to the drawing (or model) of its sub assy so that in the future we can find it.

I've been able to embed it but I can't seem to link it.

I'd like to do both, embedded so it's definitely there but also have a copy linked so that people see it when they use revision manager etc. I don't think most people, including me, would think to look for the embedded file.

Any ideas/comments?

This looks like the exact same post as on the SE newsgroup.

If you attach the file to the binder, it will not show up in RevMan but will be in the file. The only way to get it to show up in RevMan would be to insert the file the same way you would OLE a Word document. If you don't want it to show all the text on the drawing face, consider importing it into a background sheet that you don't use or the 2D Working sheet.

‘Tis indeed the same question. I’ve found sometimes I’ll get a slightly different style of response on this site than from the SE user group.

For a PDF file using the binder command I can either embed, in which case as expected it doesn’t show in rev manager, or I can link it, in which case as expected it does show in rev manager.

With the CFG file using binder whether I try and embed it or link it the file gets embedded.

I tried object insert on a dft and it wouldn’t let me link it, only embed it, in which case it shows a tile and file name, not the actual file contents, in the dft. Plus obviously it doesn’t show in rev manager

I just wondered if I was missing something.

I hate to have you try this because I don't know what it will affect downline, but are you able to rename the .cfg to .txt?

I have a feeling that because SE uses .cfg for assembly display configurations, that it may treat a .cfg file differently than another filetype. Then again, it could just be a Windows thing.

I was thinking along the same lines about SE use of cfg files.

I can get the .CFG file to open up in notepad in an intelligable form and am going past this into a spec that goes along with the drawings.

So I suspect I could rename it .txt (or just save it that way) without trouble. However, before I went to download it to the camera again I'd have to rename to cfg and I think there is too much liklihood of it getting messed up, since it might not be me coming back to it.

I think I'm gonna live with it embedded and just give the CFG file to doc control to put in the appropriate file in their secure area.
