ELECTRIC SERVICE AMPACITY OF A MULTI-DWELLING BUILDING

Hi Gurus,

How do you determine if a building has sufficient ampacity for new installations without getting the landlord involved? I am profoundly interested in his leasehold, but the landlord has no idea if his property has sufficient power, but need me to figure out without getting him involved in any way. Building has 600A main disconnect switch servicing some tenants. I wanted to use data logging to asses the building peak load, but landlord wont allow. I would appreciate your suggestions. Thanks

If you're subject the NEC, you're probably out of luck then. There's a couple of paths, but both require cooperation of the building owner. The first is a utility bill analysis, the second is data logging. Otherwise you're probably stuck treating it all as new and figuring out the loading as it would be for a complete new design. That's going to overstate the load and leave you with less headroom than either of the other options.

Do some research on the revenue meter. You may find that the meter stores demand data even if the occupancy is not on a demand tariff.
Further to Davids excellent information;
Utility bill analysis is by far the quickest and cheapest for a service on a demand tariff.
With one or two years of back bills you may quickly determine accurate information that would take one or two years to accumulate with data logging.

Of course, its likely an indication of the experience in dealing with the landlord if they're that helpful now.
