Hi,

I have done the FEA on a weld joint (sheet metal laser welded to a solid shaft). There is no filler material involved and due to a fillet and a corner break on the mating parts, there is a sharp corner in the FE model. There is not much info on how much the weld would penetrate and what shape it would be.

The stress at this very sharp corner (1 node)is like 1000 MPa and the yield stress of the material is 200 MPa.I am not sure how to conclude on this one. So I included the plastic properties in the model and run the analysis. Now the equivalent plastic strain at that sharp point is 2%.I am not sure how to conclude based on these results.

I am using ABAQUS as solver.

I appreciate all your help on this.

thanks

Why are you doing the analysis? What were you expecting to gain from the analysis?

As you don't really know the weld profile nor how far the weld material penetrates I don't think you can have much confidence in the validity of the results. The stress at a corner will be infinite and localised so I would ignore values there.
