Hello,

I would like to ask some questions.
My gasket groove looks like as below. It's a confined groove facing flat bottom of upper flange.

In Table 2-5.2 Effective Gasket Width, I don't find any groove types that I have. The seal is self-energized metal c-gasket.
How can I find the effective seating width for this type?

Thank you!

In my book gaskets are not self-energizing (or at least do not rely on that for sealing). It would be a seal ring or square o-ring. Gaskets rely on compression for sealing and different principles apply. Perhaps this is why you cannot find the information.

Hello,

Thank you for the replies.

TO Compositepro
I am using one of self-energized seals in this catalog.

Thank you so much for the information.
Could let me know if i can apply ASME SECTION VIII DIV APPENDIX2+ Blind flange UG-34 to this configuration in the drawing?

Thank you for your time.

In my opinion, the design you show with the gasket described would create no measureable moment between the gasket and the bolts. The closest Figure UG-34 design would be (p), which corresponds to a flat faced gasket that also has no edge moment loading.

This this in mind, the design thickness should be based on UG-34(c)(2)(1),
t = d(CP/SE)^0.5,
rather than UG-34(c)(2)(2),
t = d*((CP/SE + 1.9Whg/SEd^3)^0.5.

In this case, C would be equal to 0.25" and d would be equal to the bolt circle.

App. 2 is not intended for use where there is metal to metal contact outside the bolt circle.
