I am rebuilding an old road in Texas. The proposed section is 1.5" type'D' Hmac over 2.0" Type 'B' HMAC over 8.0" A2Base, over 6" lime stabilized subgrade. The existing road section was thicker than the proposed because of 9-inches of existing asphalt.

What would be the effect of mixing 2-inches of base material with 4 inches of high PI natural subgrade and lime stabilizing it?

Would this subgrade section have about the same structural number as 6 inches of lime stabilized high PI natural subgrade?

thanks in advance for your support.

ChipperB...those are questions that can really only be answered by lab testing.

Considering your existing pavement section, have you thought about mixed in-place recycling? You could do a 10 or 12 inch depth mix and make a very stable base for an asphalt surface. This would likely be very cost effective for your client. Check it out.

I'm assuming that would translate from TexDOT-speak into 1 1/2" top course HMA on 2" base or binder, over 8" granular subbase. That's a pretty light section. What are your traffic loads in ESALs?

I agree with Ron on the both the need for lab tests and the effectiveness of full-depth reclamation.

Agree with the full-depth reclamation option. 9" is a lot of asphalt - seems like a waste to not use it.
