E70XX electrodes

I would like to specify the most generic electrode for a particular tensile strength requirement. I thought that "E70XX" was the way to do that and would allow freedom for the fabricator to use whatever welding process was suitable while still getting 70 ksi electrode ultimate strength. I read a post from 2014 that suggested otherwise, but didn't give any alternative. thread607-370919

I understand that "E7018" is not generic, it is a stick ("1") low-hydrogen ("8") electrode. But if E70XX is not generic, what is?

E7018 are about as generic and common as you get... I think all stick manufacturers provide something similar/identical.

Thanks Dik! I want to allow the fabricator to use wire-feed also, so I didn't want to specify "E7018" as this is a stick electrode. I'm looking for the spec that allows stick or wire-feed.

I don't know this is the most correct way, but since HG's thread, I've been specifying "minimum 70 ksi electrodes"
