Hello everyone,

I am just applying unidirectional strain to a isotropic 2D plate. So I am using 2D plane stress elements CPS4 to model it. My strain direction is 1. So there should be non zero strains in the other 2 directions due to poisson's ratio. But I am always getting E33 = 0 (3 is the out of plane direction). Anyone knows why? Thanks!

Did you assign a thickness to your plate?

I think that abaqus does have a plain stress formulation (3 X 3 matrix) but includes a through thickness strain term to account for thickness reduction due to poisson effects:

e3 = (-V13/E11)S1 - (V23/E22)S2
