I'm checking some calcs, and the engineer lists E308-L-16 welds. The calcs list the ultimate capacity as 4.18k/in for a 3/16 fillet weld (or perhaps a flare bevel weld).

I want to check that 4.18 number, and my question is what is Fu of E308? (Using equation P=0.3*Fu*0.707*t for ult. capacity).

Are you dealing with fillet welds in your design or groove welds because you state a fillet weld leg length and refer to a flare bevel groove weld design?

The UTS of SFA 5.4 E308L-16 is reported to be 75 Ksi minimum. If you use the reported UTS in your equation above for Fu, the value of P (lbs/inch) = 2983 or ~3000#/inch.


The easiest way to check the allowable force for fillet welds is as follows;

fillet leg size = actual force/allowable force

For fillet welds, if you know the actual resultant force(s) on the weld, you can use the specified fillet weld size to double check the specified allowable force per inch of weld.
