This is actually a structural question but I thought that this forum would be more appropriate.

When tapping into existing drainage structure I believe that controlled demolition is the key. I have been requiring concrete coring for taps to existing box culvers and stone arches (up to 24" diameter). Generally the contractors and equipment are available.

Does anyone have any additional thoughts or techniques for tapping into RCP pipe and manholes to control the demolition. That is, not using a demolition hammer which does not create a neat opening. Should saw cutting be used on manholes and large diameter pipe? What about coring for manholes and large diameter pipe? Any experience in these situations?

Thanks

Sawing half way through RCP pipes allows a stress crack to reflect through with the application of the "demo" force. Once you have the crack you can cut the reinforcing. this gives you much less damage to the pipe or structure.

I believe that sawcutting is appropriate for manholes and pipe. For larger structures (particularly box culverts) I think that coring is justified. Generally I like to have non-shrink grout to seal the opening although I understand there are gaskets available for this purpose.
