Help, I can't drag some component parts when I insert them into assy's. Some do & some don't (more often don't). They move by mates but not free drag.
As a footnote I seem to have more trouble with 2008 than any other version
Cheers

I can't see why it should only affect some parts but check >Tools > Options > System Options > Assemblies and make sure that the "Move Componenets by Dragging" CheckBox is ticked.

If it isn't that, see if the part has a (f) before its name in the Tree Pane and if it has, RMB and select "Float" from the pop-up menu. Usually all bar the first part in an assembly is floating and is denoted by (-) before its name.

Finally check to see that no automatic mates have been created on insertion.

Forgot to say that the (-) of a floated component, dissapears when it's position is fully defined by mates.

Checked all that, but settings all OK.
I've also tried dragging the part from the main assy into a sub assy in the manager tree & it can be moved as expected in that.

"I've also tried dragging the part from the main assy into a sub assy in the manager tree & it can be moved as expected in that. "
Probably because any mates created in the TL assy are being broken when the part is dragged into a sub-assy.

Is the sub-assy the part is being dragged into, set to flexible? If it is not, you should not be able to move the part.

Can you zip and upload the assy (or a simulation of it) for review?

I just wanted to say that Digger200 is not alone. In all of the previous releases of SW from SW1999 until SW2007 I never had a problem with 'drag & drop'. It always worked. Now with SW2008 it will work intermittently. I will 'drag & drop' a part and it will work, however, I will repeat the 'drag & drop' of the same part sometime later and it will not copy. It appears to me that it’s just one more bug of many in SW2008.

CBL I've tried making the sub assy both flexible & rigid and it still accepts the part OK.

A flexible or non-flexible sub-assy will accept parts which are dropped into it, but you stated;
"I've also tried dragging the part from the main assy into a sub assy in the manager tree & it can be moved as expected in that."
So, can the part be dragged around in the sub-assy? If it can, that means that the sub-assy is set to Flexible, and that some mates or constraints were broken when the part was moved from the main assy to the sub-assy.

Sorry mate, but there were no mates at any time. It must be my system because sometimes when it won't free drag I put a mate to it, then it will free drag in the other non mated directions. ??

CBL Seen your other post - I had noticed that lock symbol appearing sometimes & it wouldn't let me change a mate type so it could well be that. I'll investigate along those lines
Thanks
