Does WPB grade apply only for A234

Does WPB stand only for ASTM A234 ?

I'm asking because ANSI B16.9 fitting are only marked WPB, they were ordered A234 gr WPB but how can I be sure it's A234 the only way it is OK is if they is no other materials with this grade ?

I'm pretty sure I have never seen it under any other specification. You can do a lookup at

but understand that the data on my site is NOT kept current to any ASME Addenda. I'm pretty sure C-Specs is when you purchase their software. OF course your best bet is a current code.

WP is not restricted to A234. If you refer MSSP 75 for large diameter fittings then you would find WPHY etc.

Some body told me W stands for weldable, P stands for "made from pipe", B stands for items equivalent to grade B (A 106 Gr B, API 5l Gr B etc), HY stands for high yield.

In castings you may find WCB, Here "C" stands for casting.

Hmm. I thought it went...

WP - wrought product
WPL - wrought product for low temp service
F - forging
LF - forging for low temp service
TP - tubular product

ASTM did not seem to have a consistent scheme in place when they made this all up. I just go look it up any time I come across one I am not familiar with.

I did a text search of the B&PVC Section II and could only find WPB associated with the A234 spec, and A234 specifically states that the spec number does not need to be marked on the fitting...

It is possible what reichertc is mentioning is true. But what about WCB in A216 which is a casting spec. I was also told about wrought product, but when the inconsistency was noticed in case of castings, i switched sides.

Can any one fill us in with the appropriate suffix deciphers.
