After we cold saw the gears and polish the surface to check core hardness is there a chemical that you can put on the surface to let it discolor from were the case hardness starts to were it fades?

Etching with 5% Nital ( nitric acid in alcohol) will give e general guide - but you need a microhardness traverse to be definitive.
