Document Handling

Here's my question: We do machine rebuilds and at times make new replacement parts. I model and create a drawing for a repair. Several weeks or months later the customer requires new replacement parts which are modified from the repair parts. So I save as a copy of the repaired part and make modifications to the saved part. I've run into problems trying to save the old drawing referencing the modified part. I did it once long ago but don't remember how I did it. I'm just trying to avoid making another drawing from scratch when it may be different by one dimension. I've thought about configurations but I'm not sure this is the best way to approach this situation. Anyone doing similar and how I should be handling this?

Are you familiar with SolidWorks Explorer? If you locate your drawing in SolidWorks Explorer, you can check the references it contains and replace the reference with the newer file.

If you have both the drawing and the part open, use 'save as' to save both files with a different name than the original, then make your changes. This way you can have a model and drawing of each iteration.

I did exactly that this morning and the drawing wouldn't update to the referenced part. I will investigate further and see what I missed.

Save the model first then the drawing.

IMO, all users should have sonme PDM partly for this reason.
