After 2 years of field work I have proven I can make contractor's listen to me and now have gotten pulled back into the office to do design work. My first task is bringing me back to fluid mechanics which was a long time ago...

I have to design a d-box that feeds 2 clarifiers. I have figured the d box will be square with the influent pipe entering through the base of the structure with a v notched weir on either side leading to each of the clarifiers. I am basing flow on the max monthly flow (3.645MGD). How do I figure out the width of each of the weirs? Thanks for any help.

1. You r peak flow is actually the maximum hourly, not monthly flow.

2. Don't use a v-notch; there is too much head loss across it.

3. Use a contracted rectangular weir.

4. Here is a chart:

5. Install an adjustable weir plate on inside wall on each side of the box (Left side for clarifier 1 and right side for clarifier 2), then put a stop gate in the middle of the wall in case you want to take a clarifier out of service.
