Can a direct shear be run on a claystone recovered from an NQ core barrel?

Thanks

The OD of the core is smaller than the ID of the direct shear machine. how would you compensate the annulus space?

I would first recommend securing a larger specimen or a smaller shear box.

You might consider packing the anulus with fine sand and running the test as usual.
But this could very well effect the residual shear values
if the sand infiltrates the space between the sheared specimen halves.

Carefully document the test procedure and explain the limitations in the report.

I have seen an adapter to make a standard shear box useful for NQ core. Not sure where you can get them though - they are just rings that sit inside each shear box, and it also has a different loading plate. I have no idea where to get them then, but you may be able to even get some made (at a machine shop or something).

I had a good relationship with an equipment manufacturer in Maryland, Karol Warner. They make shear equipment, and the made a number of special order items for me. Same with Hogentogler.
