Direct Current "Test" Power Supplies

What's the best method, or new trend for supplying Direct Current to D.C. Motors on the test floor today?
500 Volt Armatures and up... for example.

Any new low voltage arrangement ideas for testing forklift truck motors etc. would be helpful as well.

A battery and charger would seem ideal as you can replicate the real power source. After that a motor-generator set would be my second choice. Traction motors mixed with electronics won't be as tolerant of abuse as the old technologies, and in a test environment where faults will occur from time to time I would value robustness.
