dimensioning distances?

I can't for the life of me figure out how to keep all my linear dimensions a certain distance away from what I'm dimensioning. This seems like it should be an easy thing but i can't find it, i can only find how to keep baseline dims a regular distance from what i'm dimensioning. I should be able to click two points to dim betweeen and have AUTOCAD automatically place the dim string 16" from what I dimensioned. Anyone know how to do this?

We use AutoCAD Mechanical, which can do what you describe. But I do not think AutoCAD can do what you are saying. The only thing I know that AutoCAD can do is to use a previously placed dimension as a "baseline" dimension and then place the next dimensions at previously designated increments from it.

Try using the extension line offset command DIMEXO at the prompt. This is used to change the distance between the object and the beginning of the extension line. The default setting is 0.625.

Are you talking about changing the spacing between the dimension lines of baseline dimensions? If you are then use DIMDLI command. The default spacing is .38 units. ACAD automatically spaces the dimension lines this distance when you use the DIMBASELINE command.
