dimension offset

If I create a cube and look at it in 2d from the top. I put in a dimension and it looks fine. When I look at it from an isometric view, the dimension is offset a great distance from the object. I found an old post that corrected this. I changed dimdli and dimexo to a value of zero. This worked, but I could not return to the old way...I reset them manually back to the defaults and it did not seem to do anything.
