Is there a way to change the default gap?

In your drawing go to: Tool, Options, Document Properties, Detailing. The "Extension Lines" setting is in the right, upper hand corner in 2005. Adjust to suit. Of course, save your template if this setting is something you want to keep.

Thanks Mandrake,

It is also there in 2004 but I had forgotten. out of practice and keep going right to "Dimensions" and bypassing the heading "Detailing."
