Diesel Fuel Day Tanks

I have seen several installations were you have day tanks next to generators , these day tank are fed from bigger storage tanks. What is the real purpose of a day tank.

Generally you will have main storage tanks placed elsewhere at longer distance and whenever you have to supply the fuel you require pump to run. Day tanks will minimise this problem and act as buffer tanks.

Advantages are reduced pumping cost, reduced air vapor locks, extra storage and good control.

There must be a tank farm nearby supplying your day tanks. Terminology day tank is interesting and must be one adopted by your facilty staff as I never heard of that term eventho I have done boiler and machinery inspection work for the last 20 years. It seems to me that there is a one day fuel storage and such tank as indicated above acts as a buffer or as a reserve in the event the tank farm supply runs dry. It may also be used as a sediment tank before the fuel is consumed.

Ex-Nuke here. Not positive but I think the original intent was to always have a reserve that could be used in a tight. theoretically a day tank would have enough fuel for the emergency diesel to run 24 hours, but that was not the case with these, I think they'd run about 1/2 day fully loaded (more if less loaded). They were also fed from a tank farm that was 'uphill' from them which allowed for fuel xfer w/o pumps but also provided opportunity to flood the world w/fuel oil if things were left open. We monitored levels religiously. In addition to a 'day' tnk we had '7-day' tnks that fed into the 'days', more redundancy for the nukes.
