dgillette...can't do much in Polk County without it being related to the phosphate mines! I was in Orlando from '82 to '94, also with a company (Law Engineering) that is now part of AMEC (Law bought my company in '89). I did almost nothing in the phosphate mines except a dragline failure investigation. Did test all the roadways in Hardee County for structural capacity and analyzed a soil pad for a dragline move across one of the roads...those draglines are huge!

Small world, or considering that it was Orlando, "It's a small world after all, It's a small world after all..."

(3.5 years I lived there, May 83 to October 86, and never went to Disneyworld. And I haven't gone since then either.)

I remember Law, but I don't think we were actually competing much(unlike with Ardaman).

BCI was a damned good job, and I learned a lot there. It was, however, time to either leave, or buy a house and a car with AC, and start digging in for the long term in a place I didn't really want to live. BCI apparently has prospered even without me.

Geez, DG...you coulda gone all day without "It's a small world after all"!! I consulted for Disney on numerous occasions....one of those was that attraction. After 2 hours of troubleshooting with that song ringing in my ears, I had to ask them to turn it off!...fortunately they did (it was 2:00 am,so didn't affect the ride!)

Other than for work, I have been to Disney once in 25 years.

I gather you don't care for the heat and humidity. For me, it's too cold in Jacksonville! I grew up in Ocala...where July doesn't go below 90 (temp or relative humidity). Wife is from Bartow...inlaws live in Lakeland. Father-in-law was a phosphate mine manager before retirement.

Heat, humidity, almost year-round hay fever, flat terrain, lack of snow, lack of rock-climbing venues, and maybe more.

I miss some of the people, inexpensive fresh citrus and seafood, and the low cost of living.

Flat terrain and lack of snow are distinct positives!! As for the citrus, if you paid for it you wouldn't be branded a native! Used to be common to pull off the side of the road and grab a few samples...now you can get shot for that!
