Goodday,
I will like to get detailed stuff on how professional engrs design their pile structures. I have surf the internet and other hard copy texts; none seems to give me the practical aspect of pile design.

I beleive, from the content of the geotechnical report(after site investigations by a geotechnical engr);and the anticipated Design Load from Structural Design; the design engr can now proceed with his pile design.

That design processes varies depending on the structure, size of project, experience of the design team,cost/economy and other factors that I may not know. I need a practical design approach from the practicing engr perspective.

To this end,can anyone help me out;I am writing my Professional Development Report; which have everything to do with IMPROVED METHODS OF PILE DESIGN. The PD report is my life.

Thank you all.

Best regards

I have read many of your threads and I can conclude you are not a geotechnical engineer in any way. Pile design can be basic as well as complicated depending on the structure.

If you can lay your hands on a textbook like' Foundation Design and Construction' by Tomlinson you can get the basic. But since you are working with a contractor, better leave pile design to the consultants.

For each foundation you need total dead load, total live load and horizontal loads from wind and siesmic. Run each of the load combinations to find controlling load case for each column/wall foundation. Assume a axial allowable load fron soil report and either skin friction or from end bearing. Divide the controlling load combination by the allowable axial load to find a number of piles for each foundation. Round up to the nearest integer and check the loading of the exterior row of piles using the horizontal load cases. Revise as necessary to maintain less than the maximum loading for the exterior rows of piles. Check horizontal shear capacity for pile cap vs horizontal force.

Dear Delijosi,

You 're right. I 'm not a geotechnical engineer but I spent five years studing civil engineering and graduated in 2005.

I hope to specialise in geotechnics and foundation engineering; as I plan towards an MSc in engineering.

Notwithstanding, thanks for constructive comments and professional advice; I value them much. Please, find time to comment on some my threads. I love u, sir.

cheers !

There are many ways to do it that are very different from one another.
Best place to start maybe is Bowles Foundation Design and Analysis.
Some people simply driving to a firm layer or a minimum blow count based on dynamic formula or wave equation. Some people specify a test pile with either dynamic testing or static testing. Some people use a static analysis, of which there are many different methods. Most use a combination of the three.
