As part of an engineering project, I have been given the task to come up with a log cutting system. I must design an automated AC motor powered cutting system for sawing timber across the grain in variable short lengths for firewood at a maximum rate of 0.6 tons/hour and a max trunk diameter of 0.3 m. Load bearing, cutting and drive elements must have a minimum factor of safety (FOS) of 5.

I have decided to use a blade cutting system similar to this. I am wondering how to go about calculating the forces on the blade of the saw? I have researched different types wood properties but so far have not found any information on how to calculate the forces on the blade to cut the log. If anyone could provide me with some helpful links or information, it would be greatly appreciated!

Here are three papers that might help you:

An Analysis of the Wood Cutting Process Norman Franz, Univ of Mich 1958

Fundamental Analysis of the Wood-Cutting Process William McKenzie, Univ of Mich 1960

Tool Forces and Chip Types In Orthogonal Cutting Of Southern Hardwoods G. E. Woodson, Southern Forest Experiment Station 1979

All were available online - I assume they still are.

There's a paper that's often cited - Kivimaa Cutting Force in Woodworking 1950, but I've never found a copy online.

However, those three should get you started.

Regards,

DB

NB: Note that the forces depend on the specie that's being sawed and its moisture content.

Thanks!
In this equation I am given a constant, K, for resistance of disintegrated material. How do I find this for different types of wood? I've searched online but i have been unable to find anything helpful yet.
