In the design of r.c frame members, the design rebars are given as a ratio. Will some one explain how to get the spacing and diameter of the stirrups and what is the ratio diven in the design output. For example the design rebar for a member is given as 0.162, how the stirrups are calculated for this.
Thanks in advance for helping a new engineer participating in this forum.
 
Given a required ratio of rebar area divided by spacing, simply start with a trial rebar size or spacing and calculate the other variable. It is a simple thing once you get a feel for it.
 
Taro is right. The ACI gives an equation for calculating the required area of steel Vs. You need to decide what size to use (most use #3 unless you have large shear loads or are getting a very tight spacing s<4&quot;) and remember that Av is the area of two legs resisting shear(1 #3 is 0.11 sq in, so Av would be 2*0.11=0.22 sq in). Then you need only solve for the required spacing s and round to a suitable number, usually just round down to the nearest whole number.
