Howdy folks,
I need to perform the structural design of Thrust Collar and Shaft Sleeve for (hydrodynamic) tilting-pad Thrust and Journal Bearings, respectively. Can someone point me to guidelines / best practices to be followed for the mechanical design of these elements? To be specific, I would like to obtain guidance on the following:
1. How to determine the maximum allowable (elastic) deformation of Thrust Collar surface under thrust load?
2. How to determine the maximum allowable stress in the Thrust Collar due to combined loading?
3. How to determine the minimum contact pressure between the Shaft Sleeve and the Shaft with due consideration to torque (power loss), operating speed, and shaft diameter for Journal Bearing?
4. How to determine the minimum radial cross-section of Shaft Sleeves for a given application?
5. What are the available alternative means to mount Collars and Sleeves on Shafts in applications where reliability, robustness and longevity are important? (Shrink-fits being one of the means.)
"The engineer's first problem in any design situation is to discover what the problem really is."
"A good scientist is a person with original ideas. A good engineer is a person who makes a design that works with as few original ideas as possible."
