Friends,

Greetings.

Need your advice.

Topic - Design of gusseted/stiffened base plate in consonance with LRFD design principles

Question: Could anyone apply Roark's formula while using factored level forces for base plate design?
Since one of the chief assumption of Roark's formulas is that the plate is no where stressed beyond the elastic limit, therefore the coefficients used to arrive at the values of sigma(x) would be modified proportionately
prior to be employed in LRFD design.

Request everyone to put forward their opinion as to how the modification should be carried out.

Thanks & Regards.

The bearing stress under the base plate is probably not uniform as we assume it, so base plate plastification is a concept I'm having a hard time getting my head around.

Roark is based on allowable stress. Take a look at page 14-6 of the 14th edition of the AISC manual. There are equations to design a baseplate under axial load using ASD or LRFD.

If you're keeping your plate design withing the elastic range, I don't think it should be an issue. In similar situations I've used factored loads to determine a factored stress and then compared that to factored resistance (stress). If you're in the elastic range, I don't see an issue using Roarks with respect to ASD and LRFD.
