Design of 500mm wide Architectural Projections for edge beams

I have a 200mmx500mm primary beam that is at the edge of the construction, matching the line of columns.

The architect has revised the elevations to show that there is a projection outside the beam line, 500mm x 500mm. The projection has a self weight of 6 kN/m and will carry only the load of an applied tile/marble finish.

Would it be a stretch to design the projection as a concrete nib, similar to BS8110 approach?

Do note that the beam width matches the column width, so this projection would be cantilevered off the beam. Additionally, we are not in a seismic zone and the structure is not designed for any torsion, hence all links used are regular stirrups (i.e. not torsional links). Additionally, the beam will be supporting a precast concrete slab directly bearing at its top.

Please refer to rar file containing the following attachments:

* BS8110 approach
* Architectural drawing showing the projection line.
* Structural drawing showing the structural frame plus proposed projection line
* Cross-section showing the proposed projection taken from the primary beam.

I would appreciate your input on this.

You can do that as part of the slab or as part of the spandrel. In these environs it would be a real source of heat transfer and would be difficult to accomplish under the National Energy Code. In winter, floor in that area might be a little chilly.

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Feel any better?
