descaling stainless hot rolled bar 1

Flat-rolled stainless producers shot blast hot-rolled stainless plate and sheet coils before pickling to loosen the embedded-type scale which is hard to pickle off. What do bar producers do to break up the hot mill scale before anneal and pickle?

ASM HANDBOOK Volume 1 describes several conditions for stainless steel bar finishing:

Hot worked only: [1] scale not removed (except for spot conditioning), [2] rough turned, [3] blast cleaned

Annealed or otherwise heat treated: [1] scale not removed, [2] rough turned, [3] pickled or blast cleaned & pickled, [4] cold drawn or cold rolled, [5] centerless ground, [6] polished

Carpenter mills the surface of larger section square bars in order to remove the scale from hot-rolling.
