Depth of a boss!

Hi All,

I am dimensioning a locating pin and I used the depth symbol to depict its extrusion. Most commonly the depth symbol is used to depict hole depth. I know that there are few other ways to achieve what I want to show, but I want to know if the symbol can only be used to denote depth of a hole or also the depth of a feature?

I did some online research and went briefly through GD&T standards and they show the depth symbol used to denote hole depth. My understanding is "Its called as the depth symbol not hole depth". So using it on Top view when I can't show the dimension in a section view is acceptable. Please do correct me if I am wrong. Thanks for any help.

I think what you're proposing will cause confusion.

Using the depth symbol for female/negative features other than round holes may be justifiable.

Using it for positive/male features would be at best potentially confusing.

Depth is not the same as height.

I agree with KENAT. It's not clear what you mean. It's as confusing as specifying the height of a hole. Just dimension it from the surface.

Using depth symbol is not even recommended for holes if origin of measurement is not clear on the drawing.
From Y14.5-2009 Para.1.8.10: “Where the depth dimension is not clear, as from a curved surface, the depth should be dimensioned pictorially.”

Maybe create a section view and dimension the feature.

Since it's very difficult to support a boss by the adjacent surface while you're machining the boss, it's probably better to support the boss from some feature on the back side, and dimension the part the same way, back side face/surface/feature over the part to the boss face.

Good point.Thanks guys. I wasn't 100% sure, but now I am. I usually show them in section view like some of you mentioned. But it wasn't very clear and even a detail view would not suffice. So inserted some notes and section view dims.

I think it is clear enough now.
