It would appear that the denial of service attack over most of the US yesterday was assisted by programming that used appliances like thermostats, doorbells and refrigerators as zombies to assist in the attacks. Does this give new meaning to the phrase internet of things, or has this just revealed a new vulnerability that nobody took into consideration?

You are judged not by what you know, but by what you can do.

neither. EVERYONE knows about the vulnerabilities of IoT platforms. The only saving grace is that the IoT platforms are typically pretty low-powered, processor-wise, so the number of possible transactions is lower than with a PC, but there are probably 10x higher vulnerable installations.
