How many degrees of freedom must be sensed
by an inertial guidance system to establish
motion of a rigid body through space ?

Wouldn't you need at least 3 linear and 3 angular?

Your saying 6 degrees, 3 (linear) translational and
3 (Angular) rotational. Is that (3) accelerometers
for (linear) translational and (3) gyros on some sort
of fixed stable mounting (platform) ?
Thank you,
Wilg

That's the general rule, you need the 3 accelerometers to get the 3axes linear of motions and the 3 gyros to get the 3 rotational motions.

That assumes that you start from a known velocity state, of course, since you depend on integrating the accelerometers to velocities.
