Definition of total contact area (CAREA) in ABAQUS

Dear all,

Dose anyone know the definition of CAREA in Abaqus. I used the CAREA in the output and successfully got the total contact area between two contact surfaces, but I am very confused about how the contact area is calculated. After reading through the Abaqus documentation, I still did not find the answer. Could anyone provide any help?
