I have an existing pond with a riser primary spillway and earthen emergency spillway.

For the current conditions, the primary and emergency spillway were defined using a rating curve. I am working on a redesign of these spillways to pass certain rainfall events, and did not choose to define them with a rating curve, but rather as the specific outlet device.

Is one way to define these better than the other?

Using the built-in equations is easier than calculating and entering the rating curve by hand. The only reason to use an external rating curve would if you are trying to exactly replicate another routing calculation, or if you have a very unusual outlet that cannot be modeled with one on the standard outlet devices.
