I'm trying to write a script that will check the date or time and when that point is reached, execute a program.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Unix has what is called a "crontab file" which submits a schedule of commands to run at certain times and dates.
The man pages explain this and have good examples.

Just enter:

man crontab
