I have an older vertical automotive cylinder hone. I really prefer the vertical to some out today. The hone head is an older Sunnen AN model as is quite worn out. I know that in the past few years new technology has come forward to better round out cylinder bore. I would love to build or maybe even purchase a way to do this better. I would like to also be able to measure the load put on the stones. I would love to have suggestions from anyone involved in this industry,
thanks

Isn't Sunnen still in business?

Hello Mike
Yes Sunnen is still in business. Their new head is a AK3000 and just the head is over $4000 and it really is not what I like. I have looked at Rottler and otheres. All have different opinions on how to get the cylinder round. I have a machine shop here at my garage and I can build alot of stuff. Befor I pay 4k, i will build

If memory serves me correctly the AN hone head is the same one used for the hand hone drill motor driven version. Last time I bought one cost about $400 new.------Phil

My employer does zero-time rebuilds on Waukesha engines. We have a big Rottler machine that can put liner bores where they are, or where they should be. I think it can hone the cylinder bores also, but I've never seen the tooling to do that.

For $400, you might get a _brush_ 'hone' for a 7.5" bore...

A brush will not round out the hole and neither will it remove the .004 to .005 left after boring, but I do use it now running in reverse to break the fragmentation of metal loose left from the honing
