Justin,
Trust me you can do anything wrong if you try hard enough. Anyone who has ever designed something meant to be idiot proof will soon discover how somehow they can always build a better idiot.
I think what was meant that is some people make things overly complicated having a propensity to model\paint themselves into a proverbial corner. It isn't so much sketches or their use that people occasionally balk at, but really it is anything that carries the burden of deeply nested associativity imposing the task on the next user of trying to figure out how to make a simple change without unleashing a domino effect to the extent that you might more easily rebuild the model than attempt to understand it.
However I also balk at anyone who says you can't use a perfectly good tool in the way that best makes you productive. Sketch away as you see fit by all means and please also try and keep it manageable for the next guy.
My point has been made in other threads so without wanting to harp, I was referring to creating curve sections rather than construction geometry. Some of us unfortunately still have to create 2D sections on occasion. A task albeit to be avoided and foisted off on unsuspecting newbies, it is nevertheless easier if curve creation tools work to your advantage.
Regards
Hudson
