Cursor gets stuck in 'rotate about entity' mode

We recently upgraded from 2004 to 2006, and since then on a few occasions my cursor has gotten "stuck" looking like the rotate about entity icon (rotate icon with a vertical line through it).

I can still function as normal, only I'm selecting things with the very center of the cursor instead of with the tip of my standard little arrow I've grown so fond of.

A couple of times it's gone back to the normal arrow after pounding my escape key repeatedly and clicking in and out of every menu I can find. But there has been a couple of times I've had to close SolidWorks completely to get it to revert back to normal. Closing all the files I'm working on isn't enough.

Has anyone else seen this, or does anyone know how to fix it?

Thanks.

I know this doesn't help you any, but thanks for sharing your problems because it helps me alot. SW 2006 has several features that tempt me to use it, but I refuse to use it for production until SP 1.0. You and many others who are having problems with SW 2006 give me caution and remind me to wait.

You will probably here it is a video-card issue, or something or other, even though everything worked on a previous install of SW. It seems that 2006 is a little "pickier" with your hardware and drivers.

I have seen this as well, though I don't know what causes it. Seems to happen at random times.

List your Video card and drivers that would be the first place to start at. ANy system Specs will always prove to be valueable.

I have found SW06 to be one of the best SP0.0 releases in many years. I have plenty of stability in my systems, including my new machine at home. It's uses a video card that is not supported and I expected to have problems with, but have yet to have any.

I just hope those of you that are waiting for SP1 to come out doesn't get screwed if there was be a major bug in it... Doesn't happen often, but it has happened. - You must still test your files when you before full production os met.

I've included CPU info in my signature now.

I just installed the latest supported version of my video card. I will let you know if my issues continue.

ng89, i've been experiencing the same issues with my cursor! Today is the first day it has been stuck on the 'rotate' icon, even though it should be the pointer icon now. Yesterday it was stuck on the 'dimension' icon...drove me nuts! Only way i could fix it was to shut down sw.

my specs are as follows:
P4-3.2ghz
2 gb ram
WinXP Pro, sp2
SW2006-sp1
ATI FireGL X1-128 (driver 8.103) (sw certified card)

Since updating my video card driver to SW recommended driver, this has occured to me one time.

It's very odd when it happens. I'm assuming it's some sort of glitch, along with numerous other glitches I been having, particularly in sketch mode recently.

I was having the same problem with the spinning my model using the center wheel.

Most mouse drivers come with a nifty properties menu that can diagnose problems with the mouse to work with a certain program.(My Microsoft Intellipoint did at least)

Go into your Mouse properties to the wheel section, and find the wheel troubleshooter, you can pick which program that the center mousekey is not working with and will automatically fix it.

W.Y.T.D.N.T.Y Manual coming soon :)

Dang it, you guys jinksed me. My cursor icon is stuck in the "move" (I guess it's move) icon. It's the one that points left, right, up, and down. I just had to close SW, then restart it.

Yeah everything is up to date...
Seems to be a bug in SP1 for solidworks 06. I didnt have this problem before I upgraded last week.

My M$ Intellimouse Optical drivers are up to date. This only happened to me once, and it was fixed in about a minute or 2 by closing SW and re-starting SW again. Hasn't happened again yet. If this is one of the few bugs in SW2006 SP1.0, then I'm not complaining because I have had worse problems than that before.

I had this issue before SP1.0 along with several issues.

thread559-136513

I installed the SP and upgraded my video card driver, but occasionaly the cursor problems would come back.
When I followed SBaugh's advice (thanks!) of deleting the old driver, reboot, installing the new driver and then reboot again, did the problem go completely away.
It has been two weeks since I've had any problems (with SW!)

Stupidity is the basic building block of the universe. F.Z.

I just seen this issue and I figured out what was going on. I'm not sure it's the same for you, but it's been like this for years.

Example:

You are in an assembly and you use the Rotate command. Then you switch to a part (Without exiting the command) now your mouse cursor is still showing Rotate and you can RMB and click "Select", but the cursor stays and maintains the rotate icon. The fix is to flip back the that assembly you were just in and RMB and click "Select".

I hope this helps!

While that is true, that is not what I've been seeing. In that case one could also just hit the escape key to regain their standard cursor.

In my case however, nothing seems to be able to correct the cursor. I will try that specifically next time I see the issue, and report back.

It's not all that big of an issue really. Only happens about once a week. I'm figuring it's just some sort of silly glitch.

Yeah its definitely a software issue. This never happend to me before sw2006-sp1. It seems to occur on larger assemblies, which makes me belive that its a memory issue linked to sp1.

But on the bright side, since installing sp1 to my sw2006 a couple weeks ago, i have not crashed at all! And usually im crashing sw about 3-4 times a week. (knock on wood!)...SP1 seems to be very stable.

When the cursor gets stuck in rotate mode, just select the rotate view icon again to deselect it insead of picking on the select icon. There is no need to shut down SWX.

Note: This is just a conjecture from my observation.

I think that the mystery cursor that we are seeing is related to "Highliting an entity" as compared to "Selecting an entity". Because before the cursor appears atleast one entity (face, edge, etc ) turns dark pink in color ( default color for Highlight in Solidworks).

Also the cursor only appears when you hover over the graphics region. If you go the featuremanager region it will turn back to arrow.
