Is there a significant difference in the final wear properties of tool steel materials treated in liquid vs vapour?

Yes. The rate of decrease of temperature in true cryogenic processing should be slow. Dunking the part in liquid creates a very fast decrease in temperature which causes micro cracks or even macro cracks. Research out of Russia indicates that metals treated by dunking have only a ten percent chance of increased wear resistance.
