cross bracing design

hello,

can anyone give some guidance on how to design cross bracing?

Get the force and make sure the member is neither overstressed or elongates too much. Design connections to suit.

What hokie is getting at, technician00, is that this forum isn't for students.
 
Depends whether it is vertical or horizontal. Check the applicable local codes and textbooks for the proper application of the pertinent regulations and equations.

Just remember that just because the bracing is cross, does not mean you have to be.

Provide a sketch showing the details of the cross bracing you wish to design. Include forces acting on the structure.

1. Size the bracing so it limits the building/structure drift to within acceptable limits.
2. Design the bracing for strength (increase if required).
3. Design the connections so that they are a minimum 10% stronger than the bracing.

Angle bracing connected back-to-back can be fixed with a bolt central. This may enable the angle to be designed as a compression member because it will be restrained by the angle which goes into tension (please provide comment if you don't think this statement is correct).

Cross bracing is normally designed as tension only members.
