Creating screws in SolidWorks 1

Does anyone know how to create screws in solidworks? I mean creating a screw 3-D model which actually screw threads be seen on the stem of the screw.

If you do a search in this Forum, there are several threads on this subject. But, the best way is to draw the thds in the sketch and revolve it. If you actual thds, you would have to do create a helix...this is more complicated and uses alot more recources of your pc.

Toward the bottom there is a screw model I made. See if that helps you out.

Making real threads will cause you to take a performance hit . That model above shows some different ways to make a screw thread without taking a Performance hit. Using a revoloved boss and linear pattern is the best way besides just not making true threaded screws, to not take the hit.

Appart from special circumstances, we don't even bother to create internal threads and we only do revolves for externals. This has a hidden advantage. Unless you model your threads - even revolved ones - very carefully and mate them very carefully (screw that! Heh, heh, heh,...) there will always be SW drawing file graphics. Illogical edges disappear sometimes. And it make some interference checking tasks a real inconvenient pain.

, it has an inexpensive program called SolidMech (formerly from EMT Software) which creates screws & many other standard parts with ease. It has settings for no thread, simple thread (annular grooves) or full profile threads & all at the click of a button. It is very similar to SW Toolbox but I prefer SolidMech to Toolbox & used it extensively, at first, to create my own library of standard parts.

I created the threads but I needed to know how to create a thread run-out. Scott Baugh was terrific in helping me in this area. Check out the post in this forum dated 7-23-03. I think this will help you out. Good luck!!!
