Creating a slit in a solid object

Hi,

I have a quick question... how would I make a slit in a material? Like... if you have a cube and you wanted to make a slit through two faces of that cube, like to thread a piece of string through it, for example.

If you guys could tell me what function to use, I could look on help/search or even google. THanks a lot.

Sorry, I'm new to solidworks.

Go to Help > SolidWorks Tutorials and work through all of them.

If you sketch a line on a face and do cut-extrude you'll get the option for a Thin Feature and can specify thickness split equally on both sides of line or to one or the other side.

If you sketch a rectangle and do a regular cut extrude (requires closed profile) you have to dimension the thickness of the rectangle.

Good Thing to learn now:
Once a Feature is made as a Thin Feature there is no way to change the type from thin to solid without deleting the feature and recreating with a modified sketch.
