Crane wheel without flanges, driving systems

Hi all, I would like to have more informations (pictures, rules, everything!) about wheel crane without flanges. When are they used? Which kind of driving system can I use? A double couple of shafts and bearings on one side of the crane, acting each couple at the beginning and at the end of the end carriage? Is it a common solution?
